Determining Skin Type

It is essential to know what your skin type is because each skin type requires its own program of care. So, if you've been following a program and it hasn't been working, nine times out of ten, it's because the program isn't suited to your skin type.

What are the skin types?

Normal, normal-to-dry, normal-to-oily, oily, dry, very dry, and sensitive.

After you have washed your face in the morning, when do you begin to see a "shine" and where does it show?

If you answered: "Never see any shine. Don't remember when I last did." Your skin type is very dry. Skin may sometimes look chapped or ruddy, especially in cold, harsh climates. This along, with a dull complexion, may be the only visual clues that a young person has very dry skin. As aging progresses, heavy sagging is apparent. Skin may look very taut or may have deep, vertical, sagging lines and heavy, elongated wrinkles. Skin appears dehydrated or shriveled.

If you answered: "Rarely see any shine. Only occasionally in the T-zone when it is very humid." You have dry Skin. Skin may show wrinkling and flakiness, especially prevalent in the forehead, cheek and eye areas. Skin looks taut and lacks plumpness. Skin is dull looking.

If you answered: "Sometimes I begin to see a little shine in the T-zone by early afternoon." Normal-to-Dry Skin. Lines begin to form around the eyes and mouth. Skin on cheeks may look taunt, with fine, horizontal lines.

If you answered: "By mid-to-late afternoon, I may show a light glow all over." You have normal skin. Even textured skin with a well nourished look. There are expression lines. Pores are nearly invisible.

If you answered: "The T-zone is oily by late morning. My cheeks may also show a light shine by mid-to-late afternoon." You have normal-to-oily skin. T-zone looks shiny, and pores alongside the nose and forehead are visibly enlarged. There may be some blackheads and whiteheads in oily areas.

If you answered: "Within 2-3 hrs., all over shine and very heavy oil in the T-zone." You have oily skin. Shin has an oily shine all over and has enlarged pores. Breakouts more likely to occur throughout T-zone and chin. Skin has coarse texture. Skin may be flaky around nose and forehead.

If you answered: "Within 1-2 hrs., very heavy oil over the entire face." You have very oily skin. There is heavy shine over the entire face. Blackheads and whiteheads may appear all over. Skin texture is very coarse. Skin may also be flaky. Flaky skin develops when frequent or deep cleansing strips away essential surface moisture, and skin is not replenished with additional moisture.
