Q: I work inside an office all day
and my weekend activities tend to be mostly indoors. Is a sunscreen of SPF 30
really necessary for someone like me if I already use an SPF 15?
A: Judging by
your lifestyle, you probably do have limited exposure to UVB rays (the kind most
associated with burning/tanning).
But unless you live in a cave, you
are getting more UV exposure than you might think. UVA rays are the longest,
most abundant rays and unlike UVBs, the quality is consistently high year-round.
UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin encouraging wrinkling and premature aging.
They can pass through glass such as your car windshield and your office window
as well as thinly woven fabrics. In other words, you are getting sun exposure
just running errands on your lunch hour (regardless of the season).
The good news is the higher your
sunscreen's SPF, the greater percentage of UVA protection you will get.
Therefore, even if you can prevent your skin from burning with a SPF 15, you
will get greater overall protection from both UVBs and UVAs from a SPF 30.
Raysela Body Protector SPF 30+ is a
broad-spectrum sunscreen that provides complete protection against harmful UVA
and UVB rays. Raysela Face Protector SPF 30 is the perfect broad-spectrum
sunscreen for everyday use. A powerful combination of octinoxate, titanium
dioxide and zinc oxide provides protection against sunburn and sun damage by
blocking both UVA and UVB rays. In addition to providing, safe, reliable sun
protection, this light, non-greasy formula also doubles as the perfect makeup
base. Both formulas have herbal and botanical extracts to further enhance by
protecting skin from harmful free radicals, which can lead to premature
aging. Safe and gentle for all skin types - including children and those with
sensitive skin. It is recommended, however, that you consult a physician before
using sunscreen on children under 6 months of age. Allergy tested, fragrance
free, PABA free and no artificial colorants.
Sunscreen should not merely be a
seasonal concern. Summer, fall, winter, spring - UV rays are continually
present. Almost one million new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed each year and
nearly half of all Americans who reach age 65 will develop a skin cancer at
least once.
Reflections from snow and ice can be
just as damaging as those from sand and water. Nearly 80% of UV rays can
penetrate the deceptively "safe" cover of gray and hazy skies. Because clouds
scatter UV rays, you can still potentially burn just as badly as on a bright,
clear sunny day. Reflected light from surfaces such as sand, cement, water, or
snow can retain over 1/3 of its UV rays so do not assume that wearing a hat or
staying in the shade has your protection needs covered.
As a matter of fact, a tan is a sign
that skin damage has occurred. A tan occurs as your skin produces melanin as a
reaction to the damaging rays. Although this pigmentation does allow your skin
to tolerate more sun, the added help is minimal because UVAs (rays that cause
skin damage) penetrate.
