Q: Are there certain types of food that will
help me get some sleep?
A: Falling asleep, and
staying asleep, may depend on what you eat. Certain foods, rich in calcium,
magnesium, B vitamins and L-tryptophan (an amino acid in protein-rich foods)
help promote sleep. Try to get your fill of the following:
-
Calcium: Almonds, figs, beans, carrots, brown rice, spinach,
avocados and papaya.
-
Magnesium: Honey, almonds, kelp, pineapple, and green vegetables
-
B vitamins: Whole grains, wheat germ, Brussels sprouts, rice,
green leafy vegetables, cheese, eggs
-
L-tryptophan: Nuts and diary products
And what about that glass of warm milk? Milk contains both
calcium and L-tryptophan. Calcium promotes sleep by calming the nervous system.
If you don't get enough calcium, you're likely to feel tense and fatigued,
especially if you're premenstrual, when you're naturally low on this important
mineral. And L-tryptophan improves the sleep patterns in insomniacs because it
raises the brain's level of the neurotransmitter serotonin, which regulates
sleep.
